The article discusses the growing interest in the use of sugarcane based ethanol as the feedstock for the production of renewable sourced ethylene, naming two recently planned projects that Dow/Crystalsev and Braskem Corporation have targeted for Brazil. Ethylene is used in the production of a wide variety of plastics, including those used for packaging. More than 28 million tons of ethylene was produce in the United States in 2006, none of which was produced from renewable sources. Packaging companies are looking for greener more environmentally friendly solutions, as well as an alternative to high priced petroleum.
